A case study on changes in the self-concept of child with depressive traits through narrative therapy

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine effects of narrative therapy on the self-concept, depression level and behavioral problems of the experimental child having depressive traits who has a poor self-concept due to her own negative perception about herself. For the purpose, the study, based on a pretest-posttest design, applied a program for narrative therapy to the experimental child over total 15 sessions, with 2 sessions based. The comparative child was controlled with no treatment. The program was prepared and applied with a combination of narrative therapy and mutual storytelling technique. One session of the program, totaled 70 minutes, consisted of relaxation for intimacy and trust formation(20 minutes), narrative therapy(40 minutes) in which session goals introduction, stories by the experimental child, re-stories by the researcher and story discussion between the twos were provided and finally a ritual(10 minutes) in which the child wrote to herself. The results were as follows: First, the experimental child showed increase in average scores for all sub-areas of self-concept, improving self-concept as a whole. In contrast, the comparative child was lower in self-concept with decrease in such scores. Second, the experimental child showed decrease in average scores for all sub-areas of depression, lowering the level of depression as a whole. While, the comparative child was remained high in the level. Third, the experimental child showed reduction in both the internalization and externalization of her behavioral problems. In the comparative child, such problems were found still remained.
